Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland has died. He was 48.

Weiland’s official Facebook page confirmed the news on Thursday evening.

“Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts,” the statement read. “At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott s family be respected.”

Weiland’s manager, Tom Vitorino, also confirmed the death on Thursday.

Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro also shared the news on Twitter: “Just learned our friend Scott Weiland has died. So gutted, I am thinking of his family tonight.”

Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker also tweeted: “Very sad news, rest in peace #ScottWeiland #toosoon.”

PEOPLE has reached out to representatives for Weiland who have so far been unavailable for comment.

Weiland had a history with substance abuse, and discussed the topic in his memoir Not Dead & Not For Sale.
