Samuel Sarpong, a model, actor and former MTV host, has died, his rep confirms to PEOPLE. He was 40.
“It is with great sadness that the family of Samuel Sarpong, Jr. must share the news that Sam has passed away,” the rep said in a statement on the family’s behalf. “The family appreciates the thoughts prayers and other expressions of sympathy, and request their privacy be respected at this extremely difficult time.”
On Monday, Pasadena law enforcement and fire officials responded to calls of a man on a bridge, later confirmed to be Sarpong. Police said a statement that family members were called to the scene, and “provided background regarding his emotional state.”
“Tragically, after approximately seven hours of communication, the male jumped from the bridge,” the police statement reads. “He was pronounced deceased by Pasadena Fire Paramedics at 3:52 p.m.”
Sarpong, who was born in the United Kingdom, was the face of Tommy Hilfiger for six years and was a co-host of MTV’s insult competition reality series Yo Momma for two seasons in 2006 alongside Wilmer Valderrama. He appeared in two episodes of Fox’s Bones earlier this year and will appear in a small role on an episode of FX’s American Crime Story next year. Sarpong is survived by his father Samuel Sarpong Sr. and his sister June Sarpong, who is a well-known TV personality in the United Kingdom.
