It’s one of the most important elements of any wedding reception, whether you’re celebrating at a banquet hall – or Buckingham Palace.
“William likes house, hip hop and R&B and Kate seems to like a bit of rock – and she can dance all night long,” says Young, who’s rubbed elbows with the couple at society weddings and at their favorite club, Boujis.
Young first met the prince at a party at the club several years ago, and nearly made quite the negative first impression.
“I was down in the deejay booth looking for the next record and I could see this guy behind me,” he recalls. “I was annoyed because people kept asking me questions, but then I realized who it was and then I turned all polite!”
At that first meeting, the prince requested “Hey Ya” by Outkast and “Sexiest Man in Jamaica” by Mint Royale. “William was cool,” says Young. “He was really polite and when he left he waved over to me and gave me a thumbs up. I was surprised that he was into such good music – I think he really likes his club music in general.”
As for Kate, at one wedding Young played in Austria, “She didn’t sit down once,” he says. “I was amazed, honestly.” The tunes at that event? “I was playing everything from ’80s Motown to chart songs and 1950s and 60s rock and roll songs so she was getting swung about on the dance floor by her mates.”
For the couple’s big day, Young predicts a “modern” sound, plus “the best chart music of the last 20 years, from Outkast through to house club classics and a few oldies.”
