Officials say the wife and two children of Pope Francis’s nephew were killed, and the nephew seriously injured, in a car crash shortly after midnight Tuesday in Argentina, reports the BBC.
The accident occurred in the Cordoba area, about 360 miles northeast of Buenos Aires.
Reports give the name of the nephew as Emanuel Bergoglio. The children were 2 years old and and 8 months old.
Bergoglio’s car reportedly collided into the rear of a truck.
The Holy Father was “profoundly saddened” by the news, his spokesman Francesco Lombardi said, according to the BBC.
