“It’s time to take out the trash.”
Pope Francis‘ encyclical on climate change was released today, and an epic new (mock) movie trailer – complete with the above amazing tagline – is adding to the holy hype.
The clip, created by the Observatério do Clima, a network of Brazilian non-governmental organizations that advocates for climate change, stars a rope-jumping, punching bag-pummeling pontiff fighting for his planet against the evil fossil fuel industry.
Luckily he has a powerful coach in his corner – Jesus Christ himself, who roots him on by saying, “Come on, Francis, the power of ME compels you.”
The trailer may be mostly just for fun, but the opening line, “If we destroy creation, creation will destroy us,” an actual quote from one of Pope Francis’ recent sermons on the environment, reminds viewers he means business when it comes to taking action on climate change.
Per CNN, he writes in his 180-page manifesto addressed to “every person living on this planet”: “Doomsday predictions can no longer be met with irony or disdain The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. In many parts of the planet, the elderly lament that once beautiful landscapes are now covered with rubbish.”
“We must now seize this narrow window of opportunity and embark on ambitious actions and policies to help protect people and the environment,” he adds.
Big names such as Maria Shriver, Nancy Pelosi and Richard Branson have weighed in on the encyclical on Twitter. Here are their Tweets:
And actor Mark Ruffalo took to Twitter Monday to “LOL” at the mock trailer, Tweeting:
