Philip Seymour Hoffman at His Best: Oscar Shout-Out to 'Ma'

Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s death brought an “outpouring of tributes from fans and friends; consistent among them are mentions of his kindness and grounding. This video is the perfect example of that.

Hoffman’s uncanny performance as author Truman Capote in 2005’s Capote won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Hoffman’s acceptance speech, which makes mention of Van Morrison and the other actors he was nominated alongside (at one point, he simply repeats “My friends”), was incredibly heartfelt.

Near the end, seemingly on the verge of being overwhelmed, Hoffman tells the audience that his mother is at the ceremony, and asks them to congratulate her if they see her.

“She brought up four kids alone, and she deserves a congratulations for that. We’re at the party, Ma, you know?”
