Whew: Not a single fish was injured or killed in the making of “The Perfect Storm,” its director, Wolfgang Petersen, declared in a statement issued by the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Petersen, a longtime member of PETA, said, “I didn’t want to have one real fish killed for this movie. Every single fish you see is either rubber — if it’s supposed to be dead — or it’s animatronic.” At issue were four animatronic fish and about 100 replicas in the movie, which also stars George Clooney (he’s real, by the way), but, have no fear. As PETA president Ingrid Newkirk told USA Today: “If there were an Oscar for compassion, Wolfgang Petersen would be a shoo-in.”
