UNVEILED: Mariah Carey, 33, sat in the front row Saturday night at the Versace fashion show in Milan and lost the battle to keep her breasts covered inside her diaphanous white evening gown, Monday’s Washington Post reports (under the headline, “Invasion of the Bodice Snappers”). The paper says the diva’s battle to keep herself covered inside the outfit was “a fixed fight.”
DELAYED: The drunken-driving trial of singer Diana Ross in Tucson, Ariz., has been postponed again, reports the Associated Press. The trial, originally set for Sept. 9 and then Dec. 9, has now been moved to Jan. 14. The December date was a court calendar mistake, says the news service, explaining that the Tucson city court isn’t holding trials that week. Ross, 59, was arrested last December after someone reported seeing her car driving on the wrong side of the road.
QUOTED: “I never thought I’d make it to this grand age. … I’ve been obsessed with death for most of my life, as I think we all are. Lately, I’ve lost my fear of it.” — Sting, 52, to the New York Post
DIED: William Steig, 95, a prolific illustrator for The New Yorker magazine who was known as the “King of Cartoons” for his award-winning, best-selling children’s books (including 1990’s “Shrek”), died of natural causes Friday night at his home in the Back Bay section of Boston, his agent, Holly McGhee, tells AP. The idiosyncratic Steig used a child’s innocent eye to create a wonderful world of animal characters and Edwardian-era dandies.
CAST: Vin Diesel, 36, will not be in the follow-up to “XXX” when it hits theaters in 2005, says the Hollywood Reporter. Instead, “Barbershop” star Ice Cube, (real name: O’Shea Jackson) 34, will headline as a new character. Shooting is scheduled to start next summer, under director Lee Tamahori (“Die Another Day”).
