SENTENCED: Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland, 35, has been sentenced to three years probation in Pasadena, Calif., following a May arrest on two felony drug possession charges, reports Reuters. He will be required to continue counseling and rehab sessions, as well as submit to random drug testing. Similar drug charges sent Weiland to prison in 1999, after he repeatedly violated his probation and failed to complete a rehab program.

SCHEDULED: Arguments will begin Friday in Manhattan’s Federal Court as FOX News Channel seeks a preliminary injunction against the distribution of satirist Al Franken‘s new book, “Lies, and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right,” which the network claims violates its trademarked franchise on the words “fair and balanced,” says the Hollywood Reporter. Franken’s attorney, Floyd Abrams, argues that it is really a First Amendment issue and that trademark infringement cases must yield to the Bill of Rights.
CAST: “Scooby-Doo” star Linda Cardellini, 28, has joined the cast of regulars on NBC’s medical drama “ER,” playing Nurse Samantha Taggart, described by the Hollywood Reporter as a free-spirited single mother who will make her debut in the show’s fifth episode this fall (its 10th season). Cardellini is the latest addition to the series, following the recruitment of “Bend It Like Beckham” star Parminder Nagra as a regular cast member and Glenn Howerton as a recurring character with an option to become a regular.
PLANNED: Nearly four years after his dreams for a Jethro’s Beverly Hillbillies casino fizzled in Reno, Nev., “Beverly Hillbillies” TV veteran Max Baer Jr., 65, is planning a $54 million resort in a former Wal-Mart store in nearby Carson City, reports the Associated Press. “It’s a very different concept from anybody that’s doing anything else,” says Baer (who played Jethro), describing the 240-room hotel-casino venture.
