Hilton (at the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 29) launched her Paris Hilton perfume earlier this month. "A couple of years ago, I mixed oils and came up with this fragrance," she says. "Everyone asked, 'What are you wearing?' So I decided to make it."

Hilton's signature exclamation "That's hot!" spread like wildfire and scored her a Big Catchphrase trophy at the VH1 Big in '04 Awards on Dec. 1. On Nov. 19, she sported a cheeky – if grammatically incorrect – version of the saying.

Hilton strikes a pose in her infamous sex tape with ex-boyfriend Rick Salomon. After the video hit the Internet in late 2003, Salomon in 2004 sold a longer version of it, titled One Night in Paris. Hilton reportedly had asked him for a portion of the profits from the video's sales, which she planned to donate to charity "in an effort to turn this situation into something positive," says her rep.

After seven months together (and his-and-hers tattoos), Hilton and former Backstreet Boy Nick Carter parted ways on July 22. "Our relationship totally was based on distrust," says Carter (with Hilton in January). "She didn't trust me. I didn't trust her." Yet, he adds, "She'll have a place in my heart, always."

On July 29, a bruised Hilton showed up at Los Angeles International Airport with her sister Nicky. Ex-boyfriend Nick Carter immediately went on the defensive after rumors spread that he caused her bruises. "I didn't touch her," he told PEOPLE. "I'm not that kind of guy." Hilton never revealed how she received the mysterious injuries. "I'm doing okay. I'm just so happy to be single right now," she said at the time.

"I take my family seriously. I take my dog Tinkerbell seriously. I take my work seriously. But I don't take myself all that seriously," writes Hilton (in Beverly Hills on Sept. 13) in her memoir Confessions of an Heiress, which was released in September (and co-authored by Merle Ginsberg).

On Aug. 11, Hilton's beloved Chihuahua Tinkerbell went missing – and Hilton (on Aug. 17) posted signs all over Los Angeles offering a $5,000 reward for her safe return. To throw off any potential kidnappers from holding the missing pooch for ransom, Hilton family personal assistant Wendy White first claimed that the pup was her dog, Napoleon. A week later, Tink surfaced unharmed.

A connoisseur of the celeb party scene, Hilton can often be found hitting the dance floor in hotspots in New York, Los Angeles and Miami Beach (where she partied the night away at producer Jermaine Dupri's birthday event on Sept. 23). Hilton presents Carmen Electra with a smooch – and the award for Best Kiss for her bussing scene in Starsky amp Hutch – at the MTV Movie Awards on June 6. "At least I had good breath," a relieved Electra said of accepting the impromptu peck.

The hotel heiress shows off her vocal stylings at the opening of Miami's Pawn Shop nightclub Oct. 3. Music fans have already gotten a taste of Hilton's singing: A bootleg version of her single "Screwed" turned up on the Internet during the summer. Hilton's still-to-be-titled debut album is scheduled for an early 2005 release.

Hilton and friend Nicole Richie hit the road again in October – this time on a Greyhound bus – for the third season of The Simple Life, which premieres Jan. 26. One of their gigs was working in a funeral parlor. "I'm scared of dead people, so I didn't love that job," says Richie. Among their less-than-glam duties: moving caskets and driving a hearse.

Hilton (greeting fans outside the Late Show with David Letterman studio in New York on June 14) "is just trying to work and build a career and find the right guy along the way," says pal Chad Muska. As for her movie career, Hilton is filming the comedy Pledge This! and her horror remake House of Wax is due in theaters in April.
