Julia Roberts is expecting twins with husband Danny Moder, PEOPLE has learned. She is due to give birth early next year, according to her spokeswoman, Marcy Engelman.
Next week Roberts will head to Italy to begin shooting Ocean’s 12, the sequel to 2000’s Ocean’s 11, with returning costars George Clooney, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt.
Roberts, 36, and Moder, 35, have kept a decidedly low profile ever since tying the knot on July 4, 2002, at her 82-acre ranch in Taos, N.Mex. The couple have stayed away from the red carpet, while splitting private time between their homes in Taos, Venice, Calif., and New York City.
Tabloids, meanwhile, have continued to speculate about problems in their marriage. But in a PEOPLE cover story on their one-year anniversary last July, a source close to the couple rebuffed the talk of trouble, saying, “They are a very happy, peaceful and private couple.” Added Moder’s father, Michael: “They’re doing fine.”
Roberts had plans to start a family with Moder “in due course,” she said in 2002. “It’ll be great.” Twins, it turns out, run in Roberts’ family: Her great grandmother and a pair of cousins are matched sets, Engelman said.
