Oprah Winfrey 'Stunned' Dad Is Writing Book

Posted on

Oprah Winfrey – who admitted earlier this year she was "devastated" when a relative sold her secrets to a tabloid – recently had another rude awakening courtesy of a family member.

Her father, Vernon Winfrey, 74, is allegedly writing a book about her – and Winfrey says she was “shocked” that she learned about the memoir, Things Unspoken, not from her dad, but from a gossip column.

“One of my assistants said, ‘The Daily News is calling,’ ” Winfrey, 53, tells the New York Daily News’s Rush & Molloy column. ” ‘They say they heard your father is writing a book about you.’ ”

Winfrey recalls: “I said, ‘That’s impossible. I can assure them it’s not true.’ But then my sister said, ‘I think you should call your father.’ I called him and it turned out he is writing a book. The worst part of it was him saying, ‘I meant to tell you I’ve been working on it.’ ”

On Tuesday, Vernon Winfrey told TVGuidecom that he is not working on a book, but that he might consider writing one later. Asked if he’d spoken to his famous daughter about a possible book, he said: “No. It’s just on hold right now, OK?”

As for Winfrey, the Daily News reports that she said when she heard about the alleged project: “I was upset. I won’t say ‘devastated,’ but I was stunned. The last person in the world to be doing a book about me is Vernon Winfrey. The last person.”

Vernon Winfrey reportedly says in his book proposal that Winfrey was “out of hand, an unruly child. … She had secrets. Dark secrets. Some I didn’t discover ’til she was a grown woman, ’til it was too late.”

Still, Winfrey tells the Daily News she has “a good relationship” with her father and insists, “We talk, we talk, we talk.”
