Oprah Winfrey has issued a statement in response to the arrest of a dorm matron at her Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Henley-on-Klip, South Africa, near Johannesburg.

“I’d like to thank the South African Police Services for bringing this investigation at my Academy to a timely resolution,” Winfrey, 53, said on Friday, the day that the arrest was announced amid allegations of sexual and physical abuse.

The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, is due in court on Monday.

“I am grateful for their compassion and sensitivity to the girls during this difficult time. It means the world to me,” Winfrey continued.

“It is my deepest hope that the accused is brought to justice and that this serves as a reminder that any time a child has the courage to step forward, it is our duty as adults to listen and take immediate action.”

The school, which offers free tuition, uniforms, room and board, opened in January. The TV mogul herself chose its 152 pupils – each and every one a straight-A student from an underprivileged background.
