O.J. Simpson took a break from his golf game Tuesday to lash out at Fred Goldman, the father of Ron Goldman, who was murdered in 1994, New York’s Daily News reports.
Although Simpson was acquitted of murdering Goldman and Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, a civil jury found the onetime football star responsible for their deaths. Fred Goldman was awarded a $33.5 million judgment from Simpson in that suit.
On Tuesday Simpson told a camera crew that if he had to work in order to pay the Goldmans, he would not work. “I’ll just play golf every day,” Simpson said. He also had some particularly harsh words for Fred Goldman: “He didn’t care about his son when he was alive,” Simpson said. He also accused Goldman of trying to make money off his dead son.
The statements followed a recent decision by a judge ordering a friend of Simpson’s to sell some Simpson-related memorabilia, including press passes from the 1984 Olympics, in order to help satisfy the Goldmans’ judgment.
Simpson has denied killing Goldman or his ex-wife, and he has been especially reluctant to pay Goldman the money he was awarded. So far only about $500,000 has been paid.
Simpson currently collects about $28,000 to $30,000 per month from his NFL pension and an annuity, but that money is exempt from victims’ attorneys.
