Now You, Too, Can Play 'American Idol'

Posted on

Simon Cowell is coming to your house.

The British game publisher Codemasters announced Thursday it has secured worldwide rights to publish video games based on FOX’s “American Idol,” reports Reuters.

The game, to be compatible with PCs and Sony’s PlayStation 2, is set to hit stores this fall.

Codemasters describes the electronic version as a “music-based rhythm-action game” that will feature the likeness and commentaries of “Idol” judges Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson and (as if being dressed down by your parent or significant other isn’t enough) the sharp-tongued Cowell.

Players will be able to create and mold a character, who will then select from among 40 musical tracks to perform for the judges. Codemasters said part of playing the game will entail getting the on-screen contestants to sing in harmony and dance to the beat.

Meanwhile, FOX’s “Idol” is still on a roll. Wednesday night’s episode was the most-watched show in prime time. At its peak, notes Reuters, the show drew 22.5 million viewers and a 19 percent share of households watching TV.
