A “drooling, droopy-eyed” Nick Nolte was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol Wednesday, after police allegedly spotted his black 1992 Mercedes-Benz swerving across a Malibu highway.
“An officer making a traffic stop on Pacific Coast Highway heard tires squealing and saw the vehicle driven by Nolte approaching rapidly, weaving across all lanes and into opposing traffic,” California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang tells Reuters.
“The officer made stopped the vehicle and found that Mr. Nolte at that point seemed completely out of it,” Tang said. “He was drooling, (with) droopy eyes. He … looked very much like he was under the influence.”
According to the Associated Press, Nolte, 61, who failed a field sobriety test, remained in custody until about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at which time he was cited and released.
The actor’s publicist, Arnold Robinson, told AP he had no immediate comment.
“He was extremely pleasant and cooperative,” Tang said of Nolte to Reuters. “Apparently there were even a few passersby and one of the passersby stopped and took pictures.”
