Country singer Johnny Rodriguez, 46, is facing a murder charge in connection with the Aug. 29 shooting death of a man in South Texas. Carlos Tovar, a lifelong friend of the singer, is also charged with murder in the death of 26-year-old Israel Borrego at Rodriguez’s mother’s home at Sabinal, about 60 miles west of San Antonio. District Attorney Tony Hackebeil said “We believe the evidence shows that Johnny Rodriguez was the shooter and (Tovar) was involved sufficiently” to be indicted on a charge of murder. Rodriguez’ attorney, Alan Brown, says his client acted in self-defense, thinking Borrego was an intruder. Borrego was shot once in the abdomen. The defendants will be arraigned Jan. 19.
