Money Remains on Kidman to Win Oscar

Posted on

“Chicago” star Renee Zellweger may have snatched the Screen Actors Guild award for best actress, but oddsmakers are still putting their money on “The Hours” star Nicole Kidman for the Oscar win March 23, Australia’s Associated Press reports.

Of course, Kidman, 35, is Australian — so naturally there may be some bias in the AAP report.

Still, AAP points out, all three New York Times film critics predicted on Sunday that the Oscar would end up in the hands of Kidman. And bookmakers from Las Vegas to London to Australia’s Alice Springs are reportedly remaining faithful to Kidman — who remains the favorite with odds of about 4:7.

Zellweger, meanwhile, comes in second at 15:8; Julianne Moore (“Far From Heaven”) is third, at 4:1; followed by Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”), 25:1, and, running a distant fifth, Salma Hayek (“Frida”), 33:1.

The SAG Awards, however, are often a strong indicator of how the Oscar vote will go (many SAG members are also Academy voters). Six of the last seven SAG best actress winners went on to win the Academy Award. Furthermore, Oscar voters have until March 18 to submit their final ballot, which means that Zellweger’s win could become a factor.

In several quarters Kidman was a frontrunner to win the Oscar last year, for “Moulin Rouge.” The Oscar, however, went to Halle Berry, for “Monster’s Ball.”
