The angsty, auburn-haired darling of the ’80s is all grown up. Molly Ringwald turned 46 Tuesday.
The actress, who recently had a recurring part on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, is best known for her place in the Brat Pack of the 1980s, portraying a series of sulky yet relatable, adolescent girls with spot-on fashion sense.
Ringwald’s rise to teen queen stardom began with Samantha Baker in 1984’s Sixteen Candles. The film empowered young viewers to shrug off the high school hierarchy – as well as oblivious family members – and dream big.
That sweater vest! That cake! That car! Yes, the bar for dreamiest Sweet 16 was set when Jake Ryan, the high school stud, swooped in to save Samantha from her birthday blues.
Hopefully, Ringwald’s 46 candles prove to be just as perfect. While we can’t give her the devastatingly adorable Jake Ryan of 1984, we can take a moment to relive one of film’s most romantic fire hazards in the clip above.
