She plays the mom of triplets, including one adopted son, on This Is Us now, but Mandy Moore has long known a thing or two about being part of an unconventional family — and she thinks it’s better that way.
The 32-year-old actress opened up about how her “seemingly traditional” family changed after she and her two brothers grew up. Besides having a teenage pop star in the family, Moore revealed that her parents divorced when her mother left her father for a woman and that both of her brothers are gay.
In an interview with Byrdie, Moore shares that her family members are now “exactly where they should be. Everyone’s so much happier, richer, and more fulfilled, being their authentic selves.”
At age 24, Moore attempted to create her “own kind of normalcy” by marrying musician Ryan Adams.
“I learned that that wasn’t going to be the fruitful experience I wanted it to be,” she shared.
Despite finalizing her divorce from Adams earlier this year, a family is still on Moore’s mind. She explained that she’s incorporating more vitamins into her diet with the help of her boyfriend, musician Taylor Goldsmith.
“I want to have kids in the next couple years,” she said. “I always said that I want to take care of myself to the best of my ability before I venture into that phase of my life.”
Moore also keeps her body in peak condition by going on hikes and taking fitness classes.
Her efforts to keep herself healthy have nothing to do with trying to reverse the aging process. In fact, Moore’s character on This Is Us at times appears as a grandmother — with the help of four-and-a-half hours worth of makeup — and the actress isn’t afraid for those days to become a reality off screen, too.
“I can’t wait until the day when watching 60 Minutes is perfectly acceptable for my age,” she said. “The aging process: I say bring it on.”
This Is Us airs Tuesdays (9 p.m. ET) on NBC.
