Perhaps Lorde gave him the strength to finally speak up.
Earlier in the year, photographer James Lowe, 24 – who has been dating the New Zealand singer he knows as Ella Yellich-O’Connor, 17 – was the butt of cruel and racist comments from online cyber-bullies.
But he’s somehow kept his sanity throughout the process of dating a celebrity, which he proved with a charming blog post about his journey.
“My life is probably a lot different now, but it feels normal on the inside,” he writes.
“Since originally sitting down to write this, Ella has become a two-time Grammy winner … currently she is on the opposite side of the world on tour. As much as I miss her, I couldn’t be prouder of what she has achieved so far.”
While he also talks about the pitfalls of being the center of attention (“the times I have, it’s never been fun”), he says there’s a silver lining to being exposed to Lorde’s fame.
“I’ve been able to tell tales of the many amazing people I’ve met along the way, from fellow photographers to artists I’ve always admired and never thought I’d get to meet,” he explains.
With Lorde currently on tour, Lowe, who notes that it’s not easy having a relationship with someone 6,000 miles away, is back home still adjusting to his new normal.
“I call it real life, even though for the most part it is all still so surreal,” he writes.
