Introducing Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy!
As E! News co-host Jason Kennedy watched his bride, Lauren Scruggs, walk down the aisle to Amos Lee’s “Sweet Pea,” “I honestly thought I was going to lose it,” he tells PEOPLE exclusively. “My groomsmen were giving me a hard time. They were like, ‘Don’t do the ugly baby cry!’ ”
But even with the light-hearted ribbing from his closest friends, Kennedy, 33, couldn’t help but get choked up.
“I was just trying to not completely cry my eyes out,” he says. “This is a moment I imagined happening my whole life. It just felt so right with Lauren, and I was blown away by her beauty.”
As for Scruggs, 26, who lost her left eye and arm following an airplane propeller accident three years ago, “the whole night was so surreal,” she shares. “Everyone came to celebrate with us … and the effort that people made was so special.”
Not that the newlyweds’ big day in Dallas (in an event planned by Todd Fiscus with Todd Events at the Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas at Las Colinas) went off without any hitches.
As she was getting ready for the wedding, Kennedy’s mother fell and dislocated her hip.
“She was rushed to the emergency room and it took two surgeons to get her hip back in place,” says Kennedy, who was told about the accident two hours before the ceremony.
“I was so worried my mom wouldn’t be at the ceremony, but she made it,” he says. “Minutes before they opened the door for me to walk down the aisle with the pastors, my mom comes around the corner in a wheelchair with my dad pushing her.”
And still looking “like a million bucks,” Kennedy’s mother even busted out some moves at the reception. “I did an improv dance with her in the wheelchair,” he says. “That was probably the moment most people were talking about. It was so special for me.”
Now that the traditional couple (Kennedy and Scruggs recently purchased a house together, but planned to wait until after they officially wed to move in together) have tied the knot, are kids in their immediate future?
“We’re already getting pressure from the in-laws!” Kennedy says. “For now we just want to enjoy being newlyweds and traveling and exploring a bit.”
Adds Scruggs: “It hasn’t sunk in, but it’s the most amazing feeling to be his wife. It feels like a gift to me, to be Jason’s wife, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come.”
