Last week’s emotional phone call between Landon Donovan and his estranged wife Bianca Kajlich wasn’t just a spur of the moment reconciliation.
“I’ve known Bianca for eight years. We have been and will always be best of friends,” the soccer star said Wednesday on The Early Show after returning to the States from the World Cup in South Africa.
Donovan, 28, quietly split with the Rules of Engagement actress, 33, in July 2009 but gave her a shout-out and blew her a kiss during a post-game interview after he helped keep Team USA’s hopes alive in a crucial match.
The reason for the sweet gesture: “People who know me close know how much she’s meant to this whole process,” the soccer stud, who has hinted their relationship may not be completely over, said on the CBS morning show. “I wouldn’t be where I was on that day without her.”
“I wanted to share that moment with her,” he adds, “which was really special.”
Donovan did not address claims by a British woman that she is pregnant with the soccer star’s child. When the news first broke, he told Sports Illustrated, “If I need to take responsibility, then I will provide the appropriate support.”
