Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty, the troubled former boyfriend of Kate Moss, was sentenced in a west London courtroom on Wednesday to 12 months of community service for possessing drugs.
Doherty, 26, appeared disoriented in court and frequently glanced over to fans in the legal chamber, reports the Associated Press. He pleaded guilty to the charges, but after the judge ordered him to community service rather than jail time, the fans cheered from the public gallery.
Judge Ann McLaughlin warned the rocker – who must now submit to a monthly drug test – that if he breaks the drug rehab requirement of his community service, he could be brought back before the court and sent to jail.
Prosecutor Bryony Derbyshire told the court Doherty was stopped by police in London on Nov. 30, and heroin and cocaine were found in his car. Four days later he was stopped again. Police this time found heroin, morphine, crack cocaine and marijuana in his car, they said. Then, again on Jan. 26, police said they found heroin in his car.
Supermodel Moss, 31, lost lucrative contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel after the Daily Mirror tabloid published photos of her allegedly using cocaine in a west London music studio where Doherty, then her boyfriend, was recording with his group Babyshambles.
She has since sought treatment at a rehab clinic in Arizona and resumed her career.
