Much like Princess Diana, pregnant here with Prince William in 1982, the Duchess of Cambridge, who welcomed a son on July 22, kept covered and colorful during her pregnancy, favoring ladylike, empire-waist dresses (including this Jenny Packham number, worn in London on June 4) accessorized with tailored coats and cardigans. The women's silhouettes of choice, however, couldn't be more different.

One of Kate's first – and most glamorous – maternity looks was this V-neck, high-slit Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in London on Dec. 16. Diana chose a similarly glam dress – with glitter and more room to grow – while pregnant with Prince Harry in 1984.

One thing that's on the up since Diana's pregnancy with William? Hemlines! The princess's embellished blue coat could pass for a Snuggie (did they have those in the '80s?) compared to the Duchess's plaid Moloh coat dress, paired with her trademark black suede boots for an April 4 outing in Scotland.

The Duchess's take on a red dress, for her portrait reveal on Jan. 11 in London, was a simple V-neck, cinched-waist Whistles number. When Diana chose the hue in 1982, she went big and bold, sporting a voluminous David Sassoon gown with bell sleeves and a portrait neckline.

ON THE DOT
Polka dots were definitely all the rage in the '80s, and Diana wore hers on another airy dress while expecting William. Kate's modern take on the pattern, an affordable Topshop number (worn to England's Warner Bros. studios on April 26), sold out of stores in mere hours.

ICE, ICE BABY
Is it blue for boy? It certainly was when Diana chose her flowing frock for a 1982 polo match, opting to hide her bump rather than show it off, which Kate did in London on April 24 in an A-line Emilia Wickstead creation.

A royal's formal look is never complete without a fascinator, and Diana kept her head chicly covered while making an appearance in 1982. Kate's Angela Kelly style, worn for a London outing with the Queen on March 20, was actually quite similar to her mother-in-law's haute headpiece.

Diana's favorite silhouette – flowing, with that signature tie neckline – looks as appropriate in the '80s as Kate's sheath is every bit on-trend for 2013, paired with a Tara Jamon coat and clutch for a charity visit on April 29.

AT THE RED-Y
Both women look happy to show some leg in their red coats, the Duchess in a knee-length number for a Scotland trip on April 5, Diana in a patterned piece – plus coordinating topper and shoes – while pregnant with William in 1981.
