When a reporter asks the “Le Divorce” star for a date at the Venice Film Festival, she expresses her regrets owing to the simple fact she’s pregnant. Kate Hudson Thwarts Writer’s Advances “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” star Kate Hudson demonstrated this weekend the proper method – well, her method, at least – of how to reject a date from an Italian man, reports PEOPLE.

The incident poured forth Sunday during a press conference at the 60th Venice Film Festival, where she is promoting the American film “Le Divorce,” a tale of two American sisters coming to terms with life, love and death the French way. (The movie received mixed reviews in the U.S.)

Sharing the press-conference stage with her Australian costar Naomi Watts, Hudson was asked by a forward Italian reporter if she would go out with him on a date.

“With a pregnant woman?” replied Hudson, 24, who reportedly is expecting a child sometime in early 2004 with her rocker husband of nearly three years, Chris Robinson, 36, of the Black Crowes.

“I know what you Italian men are like,” Hudson also told the would-be suitor before going on to prove she knows that of which she speaks.

Describing Venice as “an incredible place,” Hudson revealed some Italian ancestry, saying, “I’m actually half-Italian. I’m Sicilian, which a lot of people don’t know. My father is Sicilian. So there is a part of me that feels I should know more about this place.”

Although Hudson’s father is musician and actor Bill Hudson, the actress has been raised since childhood by mother Goldie Hawn, 57 – who divorced Hudson a year after Kate was born – and Hawn’s longtime partner, Kurt Russell, 52.

And in other news from Venice, there is heavy buzz circulating around director Sofia Coppola’s new film “Lost in Translation,” starring Bill Murray and which, according to critics, is showing how both the long-ago “Saturday Night Live” comic, 52, as well as Coppola, 32, have matured as artists.

In the film, Murray plays a washed-up actor who goes to Tokyo to do commercials for a whisky, only to find himself submerged in a world he cannot understand.
