You won’t spot Justin Timberlake in his new music video. Instead, the singer lets real people take center stage as they talk about romance and search for a mysterious couple.
The video for “Not a Bad Thing” premiered Thursday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and it’s a groundbreaking look at love.
Two documentary filmmakers try to track down a man who used the song to pop the question to his girlfriend on a Long Island Railroad train to New York City on Jan. 12. As Timberlake croons in the background, their quest begins.
“We don’t know who these people are, or what their story is, but maybe you do,” one filmmaker says in a voiceover. “We’re making a documentary about finding love. Have you seen this couple?”
The filmmakers also interview married couples, asking them about their own proposals and what love really means. Across the city, volunteers plaster flyers with #haveyouseenthiscouple, a hashtag Timberlake is also using on Twitter to find the engaged pair.
Will he succeed? Only time will tell – the video ends as the filmmakers approach an address, and “To Be Continued” flashes across the screen. But Ellen DeGeneres hinted that the lovebirds may still be out there, oblivious to a pop superstar’s fascination with their story.
“So obviously if you know this couple, contact us, because Justin is trying to find you, and we’ll put y’all together,” she told the audience after the video aired.
This isn’t the first time Timberlake has taken an unconventional approach to music videos: The one for his hit “Mirrors” chronicles his grandparents’ relationship, and Timberlake doesn’t appear until the very end.
