Julianna Margulies Has No Plans to Cheat on Her Husband, Today

Posted on

Infidelity is a big part of Julianna Margulies’s fictional world as the betrayed spouse on The Good Wife. Thankfully, there’s been no such high drama in almost three years of real-life marriage to lawyer Keith Lieberthal.

“I think that when you have gotten things out of your system, you are less tempted by distractions,” the actress, 44, tells Redbook in its September issue, on newsstands Aug. 24. “My only temptations now are chocolate and martinis.”

Still, through her Emmy-nominated role on the CBS drama, Margulies has become a de facto expert on infidelity – and has had to imagine what it would be like to be cheated on, or even to be unfaithful herself.

“I think the hardest thing about cheating would not be the physical act; it would be the trust you break,” she says. “I’m very happy with where my life is, but for someone like Alicia [on the show] the temptation of being sexually desirable is huge.”

No Time for an Affair

Asked why it’s mostly men, not women, who make headlines for cheating, Margulies says it’s simple: “We are tired! With all of the things we do in our lives, what woman has the time to fit in an affair?”

Not that she wants to. By all accounts, Margulies’s home life with Liebethal has been smooth sailing. They married in 2007 and welcomed a baby boy, Kieran, two months later – which turned out to be a transformational experience.

“I wasn’t someone who enjoyed being around lots of little kids before I had my son. But now I see the world through their eyes,” Margulies says. “I got some interesting offers to work during The Good Wife‘s hiatus, but I wanted to spend the time with my family.”

So, does she consider herself a good wife? “You’d have to ask my husband that question,” she says, although she does recall one particular day that might bring her high marks.

“I got up at 5:30 with the baby, went to work at 6:30 for 12 hours, grocery shopped, cooked dinner, and then later, my husband and I made love,” she says. “We both looked at each other that night and said, ‘This day will never happen again!’ ”
