The View returned to ABC Tuesday to launch its 15th season on the air – but the ladies had even bigger milestones to discuss.
“I’m going to make this marriage work if it kills me,” Shepherd, who wore her wedding dress and sky-high, sparkling wedding shoes, said at the top of the hour on Tuesday.
Shepherd, whose wedding was filmed for a Style Network special scheduled to air Sept. 13, told the audience about a close call during the celebration. “One of my bridesmaids, I think it was Niecy Nash, said, ‘Don’t wear any underwear,” Shepherd said. “They knew me and Sal had been celibate for 11 months, so [she wanted me to do] anything [I could] do to get him turned back on.”
A Revealing Situation
And when her microphone pack for the TV special fell down her back, there was a problem. “They’re lifting my dress and I’m screaming, ‘No, I have no panties on,’ ” Shepherd said. “And one bridesmaid thought I kept screaming, ‘My pancreas! My pancreas!’ ”
Luckily, her bridesmaid Elisabeth Hasselbeck saved the day. “Like a person drowning who won’t let you help them,” she said of trying to calm the bride, “I was ready to slap you.”
But Shepherd said her favorite moment was with her son Jeffrey. “That was the best time, dancing with my son,” she said. “He walked me down the aisle. He wasn’t nervous.”
After a quick commercial break, it was Behar’s turn to talk about her private wedding in New York City.
Joy Gets Serious
The big question: why after 29 years with Janowitz did she finally decide to make it official?
After making the audience laugh with her top 10 reasons (“Sick of Barbara Walters bugging her [about getting married],” was No. 3; and “Joy is expecting twins,” was No. 1), Behar got serious and said the recent passage of gay marriage legislation in New York informed her decision.
“It did have an influence on me – it brought to my consciousness why gays needed to get married,” she said of hospital visitation, inheritance and other rights that married couples enjoy. “And I thought it was a good reason for me to get married. And so did Steve, so we did it.”
Plus, she joked, “If he was going to get down on one knee, I wanted it be during the time when he could still get up from one knee.”
