Bollywood actress Jiah Khan was found dead in her Mumbai apartment late Monday. She was 25.
A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, is quoted in the U.K. Guardian as saying that the actress’s mother, Razia Khan, found her daughter’s body hanging in the residence.
The Times of India reports that Khan may have killed herself over a failed relationship with an actor.
The Times reported that she lived with her mother and sister, and they were not at home when she apparently took her life. Her mother also said that at an audition over the weekend Khan had failed to get a role because, she was told, she was overweight.
Khan’s real name was Nafisa Khan. Born in New York, she grew up in London before moving to Mumbai, which is the filmmaking capital of India, nicknamed Bollywood.
Khan made her debut there in 2007, as the 18-year-old female lead in Nishabd, loosely based on novelist Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. Her last movie was 2010’s Housefull, a comedy in which she had a supporting role.
“She was full of life and had incredible sense of humour,” a costar in that film, Riteish Deshmukh, Tweeted Tuesday. “RIP Jiah.”
