Jewel, who has teamed up with Mary Kay as a spokesperson for their “A Kiss for Country” initiative to eliminate domestic violence, puckered up Tuesday, leaving lip prints and an autograph to be auctioned for the charity.

“It’s a topic that’s close to my heart. I was homeless for a year and saw first hand how sometimes the streets can be safer than what’s at home,” Jewel said during an event at the Morning Star Sanctuary domestic violence shelter near Nashville to promote the initiative.

As for her life now, Jewel says it’s a far cry from her days on the streets. “We have a pretty normal life at least what’s normal to me having grown up on a ranch,” she says of the working Texas ranch she shares with longtime boyfriend Ty Murray.

Lately Jewel has been on the road touring with Brad Paisley, but she and Murray, a champion bull rider, typically don’t go more than two weeks without seeing each other. “He comes on the road probably more than he cares to,” she said. “He’d rather be at the ranch.”

As for the couple’s future, she says she takes making a lifetime commitment very seriously. “If we have kids we’d definitely like to get married,” she says. “It’s something that needs to be taken seriously. Sometimes in Hollywood people just treat it like an accessory and when they get tired of it they get a divorce.”
