After months of rumors, it’s official: Newlyweds star Jessica Simpson will make her big-screen debut as Daisy Duke in the movie remake of the 1979-85 TV series The Dukes of Hazzard, her publicist confirms to PEOPLE.
As reported in the magazine’s current issue, Simpson was still jockeying to become America’s favorite rural babe last week, just as Warner Bros. announced that Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott would play those fast-drivin’ good ol’ boys, Luke and Bo Duke.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers, FOX’s Arrested Development) will direct, though a start date has yet to be announced. As for Boss Hogg, Burt Reynolds was said to be emerging as the top choice. (On the old show, Tom Wopat and John Schneider played Luke and Bo Duke, Catherine Bach played Daisy, and Sorrell Booke, who died in 1994, was Boss.)
Simpson, 24, dressed up as Daisy in a denim miniskirt when she showed up on the studio lot in Burbank Sept. 1 to meet Knoxville and Scott, and, endured some good-natured teasing from the latter, who “pretended he didn’t know she was married,” a source told PEOPLE.
Simpson’s latest music video, “Angels,” is currently in post-production. According to reports, the video places the star against a variety of romantic settings, including an empty theater and a dimly lit city street. The finale takes place on an urban rooftop, where Simpson performs in a sheer white dress accompanied by a sumptuous string section.
