In matching white outfits, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jamie Kennedy had their first glamorous night out together since the actor was diagnosed with kidney stones last week.

“I feel good!” said Kennedy, who arrived at the 44th Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday clasping Love Hewitt’s hand. “This is like our first day out in six or seven days. We’ve been kind of chilling, relaxing.”

The actor, who costars with Hewitt in Ghost Whisperer, gushed over his stunning girlfriend who wore a flowing white gown to the awards. He admits he had a little help from her with his own preening and choice of a matching white suit.

“She teaches me a lot,” he says turning to Hewitt. “She’s teaching me to be a sharp dresser.” Adds Hewitt, with a smile: “I thought he looked handsome.”

Hewitt, who presented at the awards show, tells PEOPLE the couple is happy and relieved since Kennedy’s recent kidney scare. “We’re really lucky,” she says. “Life is good.”

Kennedy was hospitalized for kidney stones after returning home from a Mexican getaway with the actress, who helped care for him during the ordeal.

“She’s amazing,” he says. “She means a lot [to me].”
