Janet Jackson is denying recent claims that she has a secret daughter from her relationship with ex-husband James DeBarge.
“I do not have a child and all allegations saying so are false,” Jackson said in a statement released to Access Hollywood on Wednesday.
The statement from the 39-year-old singer followed claims last week by Young DeBarge, the brother of Jackson’s ex-husband, who said the couple have an 18-year-old daughter named Renee who is living with Jackson’s oldest sister, Rebbie.
“James and the Jackson family kept everything real close, real tight,” Young DeBarge said on New York radio station Hot 97 on Friday. “No one really knew how it was working out until things kind of surfaced.”
Jackson and James DeBarge, who had his own string of pop hits in the 1980s, were married for three months in 1984, when Jackson was just 18. Doing the math, an 18-year-old child would have been born in 1986 or 1987, after they annulled their marriage.
Young DeBarge, 28, who is promoting his debut album, also told the radio station he believed that the young woman resented that Jackson didn’t acknowledge her.
“She hasn’t really revealed that, but I’m sure that there’s some feelings there,” he said.
