White Stripes frontman-guitarist Jack White suffered a hand injury in a car accident last week in Detroit, forcing the white-hot garage band to cancel all North American concerts through Aug. 10, the Associated Press reports.
Jack White — who’s also made headlines recently for his burgeoning romance with Renee Zellweger — suffered a compound fracture to his left index finger in the July 9 accident, V2 Records said Tuesday.
The injury effectively sidelines the blues-rock duo — which also includes drummer Meg White — who had scheduled gigs in Providence, R.I., on Saturday, followed by shows in Boston; New York; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Norfolk, Va.; Nashville; Indianapolis; Pittsburgh; Cincinnati; Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio; Toronto; Montreal; Milwaukee; and their hometown of Detroit.
“Every effort is being made to reschedule these shows as soon as possible,” V2 Records said in a statement.
Following the accident, Jack White posted a message on the band’s Web site, saying, “I broke my finger, three breaks, car wreck … typing with one finger. … Apologies to those wishing to see my hand live, soon enough I’m sure. … Jack White.”
This isn’t the first time the music has been sidelined by injury — Meg White broke her wrist after taking a spill during the winter. The duo is touring in support of their latest album, their fourth, “Elephant,” which has been a hit for the color-coordinated pair, who claim to be brother and sister. (They were actually once husband and wife, divorced in March 2000.)
Questions about that relationship, however, have taken a backseat to those about Jack White and Zellweger — who first met on the set of the Civil War-era epic “Cold Mountain” and have been spotted together recently.
