Princess Madeleine gave birth to the newest member of the Swedish royal family on Thursday night – on American soil.

The princess, 31, and her American banker husband, Christopher O’Neill, welcomed a daughter in New York City, the family confirmed.

“The Office of the Marshal of the Realm is delighted to announce that H.R.H. Princess Madeleine gave birth to a daughter on Feb. 20, 2014, at 10:41 p.m. local time New York,” the family said in a statement, adding that the newborn weighed 6.9 lbs. and is 19.6 inches long. “Both mother and child are in good health.”

“I don’t think most men would be able to put up with that kind of ordeal,” O Neill said of his wife’s day-long labor and delivery at a press conference at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center on Friday. “The Princess handled it wonderfully. She’s a very strong woman.”

With dark brown eyes and hair, the newborn already resembles her mother. “She looks like her mom, which is all I wanted,” joked the new dad.

The baby girl’s name was not disclosed, although O’Neill revealed that both parents picked it out together.

What else is he keeping quiet about? The push present. “First, I think my wife has to see it,” O’Neill, 39, says. “It’s in a small box, and it’s not blue!”

The family will rest in the upcoming days while the couple embrace the first moments of parenthood.

“We’re taking it day by day. We’re just introducing ourselves to our little girl right now,” adds O’Neill. “We’re very excited.”

Madeleine, the daughter of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia, married O’Neill in June in Stockholm. They announced the pregnancy in September.

Madeleine is fourth in line to the Swedish throne, after her sister, Crown Princess Victoria; her niece, Princess Estelle; and her brother, Prince Carl Philip.
