Handsome Italian leading man Vittorio Gassman, 77, died of a sudden heart attack at his home in Rome last night, his family has announced. Best known for his stage performances in his native country, where he was considered the Italian Laurence Olivier, Gassman made his movie debut in 1946 and was signed by Hollywood’s MGM in 1953, the year after he married Shelley Winters, one of his three wives.
