DEDICATED: American Idol champ Fantasia Barrino is singling out young mothers on one of the tracks off her new album, Free Yourself. The recently minted 20-year-old star said the song “Baby Mama” is for teenage moms struggling to support themselves and their children, the Associated Press reports. Some critics have complained that the song condones having children out of wedlock, but Barrino, who has a 3-year-old daughter herself, said that is not the case. “If I could have waited, I would have,” she said.
JOINED: Radio talk-show guru Dr. Laura Schlessinger told a crowd on Saturday how she is coping with her son’s enlistment. Deryk Bishop, Schlessinger’s 19-year-old son, enlisted last year and joined his mother onstage and told the crowd of Army reservists that he wanted to be a part of the fighting, AP reports. Bishop is expected to join the U.S. Special Forces later this year, and could be deployed to the Middle East. But Schlessinger is not too worried about her son’s welfare. “I brought my son up to be a warrior,” she told the crowd. “I feel sorry for the mothers of the bad guys.”
ARRESTED: Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was arrested in Barstow, Calif., Saturday night after police pulled him over for a traffic infraction and allegedly discovered marijuana in his pickup truck, AP reports. Knight, 39, who previously served time in prison for assault and weapons violations, was booked on suspicion of violating his parole and is awaiting transfer to state prison. Knight cofounded the Death Row Records label.
REMEMBERED: Tens of thousands of Rastafarians from around the world gathered in Ethiopia Sunday to celebrate what would have been Bob Marley’s 60th birthday, Reuters reports. Among those in attendance were one of his sons, Ziggy Marley, and his wife, Rita Marley. Ethiopia is considered the spiritual home of the Rastafarian faith.
DIED: Merle Kilgore, who cowrote the song “Ring of Fire,” died of congestive heart failure on Sunday in Nashville, reports Reuters. He was 70. Kilgore started his career in country music as a singer/songwriter, and later became a manager for clients such as Hank Williams Jr.
