According to J.K. Rowling, Hermione made the wrong choice: In an interview conducted by actress Emma Watson, the young-adult author admitted that she regretted pairing off the brainy mudblood with Ron Weasley, a goofy ginger, instead of heroic warrior of destiny Harry Potter.
“For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron,” Rowling said in the pages of British magazine Wonderland.
While we would hardly dispute an author’s right to meddle with her work after publication, Rowling is, quite frankly, wrong.
Harry Potter would make a horrible match for Hermione. Yes, the Gryffindors are both ambitious, but they seem like a pair of Type-As who would make each other miserable. Plus, getting them together would ruin one of fiction’s best platonic male-female friendships.
Even moreso, the world of Harry Potter is full of eligible bachelors. There are so many more men we’d rather see Hermione end up with; our shortlist below:
They come from different worlds: He’s a snobbish aristocrat, she’s a meritocratic striver. But we think a redeemed and regretful Draco would be likely to turn his back on his old prejudices against Muggle-born wizards and see the beauty inside Hermione. And we like to think Hermione, who absolutely loves fixing things, would see Draco as the ultimate renovation project.
He always did have a crush on her, right? This duo has a fair amount in common: two idealistic dorks who matured into confident adults (as well as total hotties in the film series). And you know Neville would be happy staying home and looking after the kids while Hermione goes off to work saving the world.
Yes, there’s more to life than physical chemistry. But once the sparks wear off, Hermione and Krum stand a better chance of making it than you’d expect. He loves her for her mind, and we don’t think Hermione would ever get tired of hearing how smart she is.
The Hermione of the early Harry Potter books was almost a mini-version of Percy Weasley. Sure, she changed over the course of the series, but then, so did he. By the time they were adults, both Hermione and Percy were smart, rule-loving policy wonks who tempered their intellect with a newfound ability to recognize the limits of their own perception. They might not have made the most exciting couple, but they could have built a life together.
Who? Only the least-evil member of House Slytherin and reportedly the hottest guy at Hogwarts. We’re throwing him in as a bone to the fanfic community, for whom Blaise was something of an obsession a few years back.
Of course, there’s another path left to consider: Hermione could marry someone she didn’t go to school with. It’s lazy characterization to imagine every Hogwarts student ended up raising a family with their high school sweethearts, as if everyone’s personalities all calcified at age 17. In the wide-open, adventurous wizarding world, nobody could’ve held out for better options?
