If you’ve ever wished to be more like Dame Helen Mirren, she’s answered your prayers by dishing out her top six life hacks. The actress, who is a Grammy away from EGOT status, gave sage advice while accepting the Legend award at Elle‘s annual Women in Hollywood event in Los Angeles on Monday.
In front of a star-studded crowd that included Vanessa Hudgens, Dakota Fanning and more, the 71-year-old screen queen made a pledge that was also a not-so subtle dig at Donald Trump.
“I am going to be the nastiest of all nasty women,” Mirren said, referencing the GOP nominee’s comment to Hillary Clinton at the third presidential debate. And to inspire the future generations of “nasty” legends, she passed on some words of wisdom.
“I’m just quickly going to give you a few tips to get through life because, obviously, you know I’m quite old so I’ve lived quite a lot of life. Feel free to pass these along, my top five tips,” she said.
"Very often the roles get more nuanced as you get older, because when you're older, you've done more stuff. That's just the reality of life. So inevitably your roles get more interesting" —#HelenMirren opens up in ELLE's 2016 Women in Hollywood issue, on stands now. #ELLEWIH || Photo by @danmartensen, styled by @samiranasr. “1. Never drink alcohol unless you are celebrating something, upset on something, or if it’s a day that ends with the letter ‘Y.’ And never drink when you are driving.
2. There are no rules about love—I don’t believe—but don’t be in a rush to get married, honestly. I married Taylor [Hackford] much later in my life and it’s worked out just great.
3. Give your partner the freedom and support to achieve their ambitions. Very important and that goes both ways, men and women.
4. At the blackjack table, always split aces, eights and nines.
5. Connect with friends daily, I don’t mean on Facebook. Better to have three great friends than 300 friends on social media. Friends you can really talk to.”
Though Mirren said five, she threw in an extra one – and arguably her most important suggestion.
“6. And finally, ignore anyone who judges the way you look, especially if he or she is someone anonymous miserable creep, lurking on the Internet or is a bloated, small headed dinosaur-y handed candidate for president.”
Also honored at the Elle event were Amy Adams, Kathy Bates, Felicity Jones, Anna Kendrick, Aja Naomi King, Lupita Nyong’o and Kristen Stewart.
