Heath Ledger called his girlfriend, Michelle Williams, “the perfect mom” to the couple’s daughter, Matilda, during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show Friday.
Ledger, who was promoting Brokeback Mountain with Williams and costars Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, said of his new family: “I’m so proud. I just fall deeper and deeper in love with both my girls.”
Williams, 25, and Ledger, 26, who became a couple while filming the cowboy love story, welcomed Matilda on Oct. 28, 2005
Of the baby, former Dawson’s Creek star Williams said, “She looks like her dad.” On the duties of motherhood, she added: “We started promoting the movie about three weeks after she was born, which was too soon. I’m just learning lessons now, like learning how to be a working mom.”
But when Winfrey asked the couple how they fell in love, it was Gyllenhaal who jumped in to answer. “We made out,” he said, referring to his onscreen kiss with Ledger, “and they had a baby.”
Slightly more serious, Gyllenhaal recalled, “I remember being in rehearsal, and the two of them had googly eyes with each other.” On the Calgary, Canada, movie set, he explained, “There were four trailers, and then suddenly there were three” – because Ledger and Williams started sharing a trailer.
“There were sparks immediately,” added Hathaway. “It was adorable.”
