Gym Class Heroes lead singer Travis McCoy was arrested on municipal assault charges on Tuesday during a performance in St. Louis, PEOPLE has confirmed.
“Somebody in the crowd was taunting Travis with racial slurs,” the band’s manager Bob McLynn tells PEOPLE.com exclusively. “Travis invited him onstage with the intent of calling him out in front of the crowd, with absolutely no intention of a physical altercation. When he tried to help him onstage, the guy hit Travis in the knee area, forcing Travis to defend himself. At this point, a scuffle broke out.”
According to Rolling Stone magazine, McCoy apologized immediately following the incident. “I’m sorry,” he told the audience. “But when someone calls you something that’s ignorant and that offensive, you have to bash their head in with a microphone.”
A rep with the Maryland Heights Missouri Police Department confirmed a member of the band had been arrested and released on $500 bail.
“This whole incident is unfortunate,” McLynn says. “Travis McCoy and Gym Class Heroes are anything but violent. Their message is about racial unity and having a good time.”
Meanwhile, fans who attended the concert have posted messages of support for McCoy on the quartet’s MySpace page.
