She’s a movie star. He’s a rock star. And while Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin employed an untraditional term, "conscious uncoupling," in announcing their separation, they will now face the traditional task of dividing their considerable assets.
Just how big is their fortune? Estimates vary widely, but Britain’s Sunday Times pegged their combined net worth at nearly $120 million in 2012.
Both stars made Forbes magazine’s most recent Celebrity 100 list: Paltrow, 41, is ranked No. 71, while Martin’s band Coldplay landed at No. 14.
The hugely popular British rock band has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, and their last tour, promoting 2012’s Mylo Xyloto, grossed more than $170 million, according to The New York Times – topped only by Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Roger Waters.
Meanwhile, Paltrow appears in one of Hollywood’s most lucrative franchises, Iron Man, with 2013’s Iron Man 3 earning a whopping $1.2 billion worldwide. In total, her films have grossed more than $3.9 billion worldwide, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.
Paltrow’s income extends far beyond acting: The lifestyle web site she founded in 2008, Goop, boasts more than 150,000 subscribers to its weekly newsletter, and her newest cookbook, 2013’s It’s All Good, made its debut at No. 1 atop the New York Times bestseller list.
Also in the Oscar winner’s earnings column: several major endorsement deals, including Max Factor’s Modern Icon campaign ($4.9 million), Boss perfume ($1.9 million) and Estée Lauder ($8.2 million).
The pair also have a multi-million dollar real-estate portfolio that includes the home they bought in 2012 in L.A.’s Brentwood neighborhood, a Manhattan apartment, a Hamptons estate and a mansion in London’s upscale Belsize Park neighborhood, which they bought from Kate Winslet in 2004. Additionally, they purchased the property next door and combined the two into a single large estate.
Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Times reported that the couple had paid $14 million for a 3,650-sq.-ft. Malibu home designed by renowned southern California architect John Lautner.
The couple secretly married in Santa Barbara, Calif., in 2003. Wealthy celebrities usually have prenuptial agreements to protect their individual assets, but, if not, California is a community property state, which means that the goal of a divorce settlement is to divide marital property in half.
