The Mating Dance of the Galapagos Albatross Is Oddly Riveting (VIDEO)

Posted on

Coming soon to a bar near you.

The “funny-looking bird does its strange mating dance” portion of nature shows is clearly the best portion, so why not just cut to the chase and watch only that part?

Philip Nails was vacationing in the Galépagos Islands in June 2012 when he was treated to a rare bit of natural splendor. Two Galapagos albatrosses (also known as the waved albatross) emerged from a crowd of the birds and started performing their mating dance in full view of Nails, who wisely started filming.

Maybe with all of the animal videos on the Internet, our tendency to see ourselves in them has been exacerbated. (Or maybe it’s all those “goats yelling like humans” videos.) But watching these birds go through their elaborate routine is more than a little reminiscent of watching a new couple hit it off (or not) at a bar. That twinge of recognition you feel? Embrace it.
