Anna Nicole Smith buried her son, Daniel Wayne Smith, on Thursday in a private plot overlooking the waters of Lake Cunningham in New Providence, Bahamas.
Daniel, 20, died nearly six weeks ago in a Bahamian hospital, just three days after his mother gave birth to a baby girl, Dannielynn Hope. He was laid to rest in a pure mahogany casket with brass trim.
Howard K. Stern, Anna Nicole’s partner, paid tribute to Daniel, with whom he’d been very close, according to a statement from the family spokesman. “Anna Nicole Smith laid her son to rest today,” Stern said in the statement. “It was the most difficult day of her entire life.
Anna Nicole wore a black dress and a pillbox hat at the service, which took place by a grove of palm trees in front of a white pavilion called the Citadel.
The program, which had pictures of Daniel and his mother in happier times, had a message from Anna Nicole, which read: “My dearest son Daniel, you were my rock, you were the only one that could keep me solid. Why God took you way from me I do not understand. Perhaps some day I will. It is so hard to think of you, but I do every second.”
Another passage from the funeral program read: “Daniel Smith like a comet, blazing across the evening sky, died too soon like a rainbow fading, the twinkle of an eye gone too soon.”
Daniel died at Doctors Hospital in Nassau on Sept. 10 while visiting his mother. Methadone, Zoloft and Lexapro were found in his system.
Royal Bahamian Police Assistant Commissioner Reginald Ferguson told PEOPLE that the police have completed their investigation into Daniel’s death and have turned over their file to the attorney general’s office. Originally, an inquest into Daniel’s death was slated for Oct. 23, but it remains uncertain if there will be one at all.
