Elisabeth Hasselbeck: Unsure If Rosie's a Friend

Posted on

While Elisabeth Hasselbeck has long-maintained she and former View cohost Rosie O’Donnell are close – she now says she’s unsure if she can call O’Donnell a friend.

“Truthfully, I think a friend is someone who you have positive communications with, so I don’t know if I would define us as friends right now,” Hasselbeck, 30, tells Access Hollywood in an interview scheduled to air Tuesday. Adds Hasselbeck: “I did define us as friends, but I’m not going to make the leap to assume that we will or will not be friends in the future.”

In O’Donnell’s blog posts and recent comedy routines she has opened up about her tumultuous year on The View, saying in one video on her site that she may never speak to Hasselbeck again.

“[Elisabeth] called, and Kelli [Carpenter, O’Donnell’s partner] and her spoke for a long time. I haven’t spoken to her and I probably won’t, and I think it’s just as well,” she wrote shortly after the pair’s on-air fight. O’Donnell also later wrote in her blog, “I never tried harder to be friends with someone…I don’t think we ended up there.”

But Hasselbeck tells Access Hollywood that she does not really read O’Donnell’s blog – and that the post was unexpected news. “She sent me two emails right after that and I sent her one back,” she says. “It was a really great email, so hearing these things after really surprises me.”

In fact, the conservative View cohost has – until now – maintained that she and O’Donnell are working through their problems. Recently, at the Daytime Emmys On3 gifting lounge in Hollywood, Hasselbeck told PEOPLE she had no hard feelings, saying, “With Rosie, the conversation is always fun, real and true.” And immediately following their on-air blow-out, she told Extra, “The best thing about today is that there’s no slow boil, none. It’s there, it’s an issue, it’s dealt with and it’s over.”

While she may be questioning the status of their friendship, Hasselbeck does tell Access Hollywood that she reflects fondly on her working relationship with O’Donnell. “We really did challenge each other, but I loved that,” she says. “I found such meaning in this job because we were able to turn the lens on one another, as good friends should do.”
