Following the sad news on Thursday that disco legend Donna Summer lost her battle with cancer, celebrity fans have expressed their appreciation for the singer.
“So shocking to hear about the passing of Donna Summer,” Aretha Franklin said in a statement. “In the ’70s, she reigned over the disco era and kept the disco jumping. Who will forget, ‘Last Dance?’ [She was] a fine performer and a very nice person.”
Barbra Streisand said she was “shocked” to hear about the death of Summer, 63, who never let on to the public that she was so sick.
“She was so vital the last time I saw her a few months ago,” Streisand said Thursday. “I loved doing the duet with her. She had an amazing voice and was so talented. It’s so sad.”
Comparing the late singer’s vocals to Whitney Houston‘s, country star Dolly Parton praised Summer for having “one of the greatest voices ever.”
“I loved her records,” added Parton. “She was the disco queen, and will remain so. I knew her and found her to be one of the most likable and fun people ever. She will be missed and remembered.”
President Barack Obama said in a statement, “Michelle and I were saddened to hear about the passing of Donna Summer. A five-time Grammy Award winner, Donna truly was the ‘Queen of Disco.’ Her voice was unforgettable, and the music industry has lost a legend far too soon. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donna’s family and her dedicated fans.”
Other celebrities expressed their grief in cyberspace.
“Donna Summer – You have inspired me in so many ways,” Solange Knowles Tweeted.
“R I P #DonnaSummer LEGEND!!!” Billy Ray Cyrus wrote. “Your music will live forever.”
