“I want you to know something, from my heart, I never liked you,” the 89-year-old told the host.
The heckling didn’t stop there. Rickles commented on Fallon’s bandaged finger (Fallon, 40, was hospitalized in June after a hand injury), commenting: “That’s a great bit by the way.”
In between laughter, Fallon told Rickles that the injury wasn’t part of the show. But Rickles wasn’t having it.
“Sure, sure,” he said. “Tomorrow night come out with your neck wrapped.”
The audience erupted in laughter and Fallon took the jabs like a champ. Rickles, who first appeared on The Tonight Show in 1965, left the host with one more backhanded compliment.
“It is a hit,” Rickles said of the show. “It won’t last long, but it is a hit.”
