Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’s Sean John label, which last month announced a perfume launch, is now in wooing the former head of the Calvin Klein and Donna Karan to run its women’s wear division.
Combs’s aim is to hire Susan Sokol, a 20-year veteran of the house of Calvin Klein, where she ultimately rose to the post of president, the same position she held at Karan, reports the New York Post.
The paper adds that the deal between the music and clothing mogul and the executive has yet to be finalized.
What’s impressive about the Sean John line is the rapid rate of its expansion. After its launch as strictly a men’s sportswear line in 1999, the label – which has a children’s division – now claims annual retail sales of $450 million. In addition, Sean John retail boutiques are in the works.
When the fragrance products were announced last month, Combs, 33, said in a statement: “People express themselves in many ways – through their music, through the way they dress, and also through the fragrance they choose, so deciding to make a fragrance was very natural for me.”
He added: “Creating a Sean John scent for the New America has many parallels to the way we design clothing or record great music.”
The development of the new fragrance line is being supervised by M-A-C president John Demsey, who has said of his employer: “Sean Combs is the Great Gatsby of our time.”
