Unlike the chilly world he faces in the current disaster flick The Day After Tomorrow, Dennis Quaid’s personal life is heating up: the actor is engaged to fellow Texan Kimberley Buffington.
Quaid’s reps have confirmed the engagement to TV’s Extra. No wedding date has been set.
Last September, PEOPLE reported that Quaid, 50, was seeing Buffington, a 35-year-old banking executive from Austin. The two met the previous March when Quaid played a gig in the Texas city with his band, the Sharks.
Buffington went on to spend time at Quaid’s Montana ranch last summer, and last fall, a source close to the couple told PEOPLE, she was to join him in Africa, where he was remaking Flight of the Phoenix.
Said the source at that time: “She’s taking a leave from her job to be with him.”
Quaid’s 10-year marriage to Meg Ryan, 42, with whom he shares custody of 12-year-old son Jack, ended in divorce in 2001, after reports that she had a whirlwind romance with Russell Crowe, her costar in 2000’s Proof of Life.
Late last year, PEOPLE reported that Ryan and Quaid were on such good terms that Ryan occasionally turns up at Quaid’s gigs with the Sharks. Also, while she was filming her movie In the Cut, “he would visit her on the set — they were quite friendly,” said screenwriter Susanna Moore.
